A503 Air Conditioning Basics 4: Automatic Controls & Refrigeration - London

Trainer - Steve Nicholson

Since air conditioning systems operate at partial load for most of their lives it is essential to provide a proper system of automatic control. The treatment of automatic controls in this part of the course is virtually non-theoretical. This is because the theory of the subject is complicated. Nevertheless, a reasonable understanding of the subject can be obtained provided that the fundamental principles are outlined and the proper application to air conditioning systems explained.

Air conditioning is not possible without refrigeration. This is also a specialised and complicated subject but is treated here in a simplified manner. The fundamentals of vapour compression refrigeration are explained for a simple system and the characteristics of the major plant items dealt with.

10.00 - 11.10
Session 1
Principles of automatic control, definitions, measurement and lag, control systems (self-acting, pneumatic, electric, electronic).

11.10 - 11.35 Coffee

11.35 - 12.45
Session 2
Modes of control (two-position, floating, proportional, integral, derivative), automatic valves (authority, characterisation, two-port and three-port, turn-down and rangeability, positioners) application to air conditioning systems.
