Trainer - Steve Nicholson
To effect the air conditioning process various items of plant are necessary. These comprise: filters to clean the air, cooler coils for cooling and dehumidification, humidifiers, heater batteries, and fans for supplying and extracting the air. In the majority of cases, for multi-room buildings, a system of ductwork is also needed to distribute the air.
The characteristics and suitability of the various types of filters in common use are discussed and the methods adopted to describe their efficiencies explained.
The cooler coil is a vital piece of plant and an understanding of its performance at both design duty and partial load is desirable. The practical and theoretical performance of chilled water coils is considered and a brief mention made of direct expansion coils (directly connected to refrigeration plant).
Some systems of air conditioning need a supply of chilled water throughout the year and methods of providing this, without the use of the refrigeration compressor, are explained.
An introduction to duct sizing is given and some time is spent describing the performance characteristics of fans.
