BS 7273-4 contains recommendations that apply to the majority of premises, since it makes recommendations for the interface between fire alarm systems and door hold-open devices, electronic locking of fire escape doors and powered sliding exit doors. The code of practice does not just deal with the engineering of the interface (although very detailed recommendations are included on this matter), but comprehensive, detailed recommendations are made regarding fire detector siting for hold-open arrangements, controls for manual operation, etc.
The publication of this code of practice in 2007 has resulted in many significant changes to previous practice in respect of both new buildings and existing arrangements within existing buildings. An understanding of the code of practice is therefore essential not just for those involved in the design, installation and maintenance of such facilities, but for those who carry out fire risk assessments and are responsible for compliance with, or enforcement of, fire safety legislation.
This course examines the code of practice in full detail.
